Westminster North Constituency Labour Party has overwhelmingly backed a motion in favour of proportional representation (PR). It calls upon Labour to reject the current First Past The Post (FPTP) system, which is used in our council and parliamentary elections, and leaves many votes wasted. The Conservatives are well-known for their gerrymandering of Westminster City Council, which is a direct result of some wards being considered ‘marginal’ and others ‘safe seats’. They control the council with two-thirds of seats from less than half of the votes.
Constituency boundaries mean that Labour voters in North Kensington were moved back into a Conservative seat in 2010, depriving them of their link with our MP, Karen Buck, who supports moves towards a system of PR. Power in our country currently rests with voters in a small number of swing seats. In a fair system, seats should match votes, and all votes should matter.
Our motion was submitted to Labour’s National Policy Forum. Westminster North CLP is also now affiliated to the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform, who want the party to commit to PR in its manifesto. They welcome new members.
